FAQs
Why do you practice church membership?
While the call to church membership in Scripture is nowhere specified (explicitly commanded) we believe that it is everywhere implied. That is to say, we believe that God, according to His Word, expects every Christian to be formally committed to a particular local church body. While there are many instances we can point to, perhaps the clearest places are in the Lord Jesus’ instructions regarding church discipline in Matthew 18 and in Paul’s instructions on the same subject in 1 Corinthians 5. The Bible makes it clear that there is a clear line marking who is ‘inside’ contrasted with those who are ‘outside’ of the local church. In short, we believe that church membership is biblical because it makes clear what a local church is and who is a part of the particular local church. If you would like to ask more questions or receive more information on this topic, we invite you to speak with one of our Elders and attend the next scheduled Membership Matters class.
How can I get involved?
We are always encouraged to know someone wants to get involved and serve alongside our church family. We pray that more and more people would desire to do so all to the glory of God! The best place to begin getting more involved in life and ministry at New Journey Church is by becoming a committed member of our church family.
Why do you practice believer’s baptism?
While we recognize that different denominations and traditions hold differing views, we believe that every local church and every individual Christian must come to a biblical understanding of the Lord Jesus’ command for all of His followers to be baptized. In our understanding of what the Bible teaches on this matter, we believe that biblical baptism is the immersion of a Christian in water following their credible profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the clear pattern established by the Lord Jesus Christ himself and seen in the early church throughout the book of Acts.
How do I become a member?
There are three steps in our membership process. First, attend our Membership Matters class. This is where you will be introduced to the biblical teachings on church membership and become more acquainted with life and ministry at New Journey Church. Second, you will schedule a membership interview with a couple of NJC Elders where they will get to know you and how you became a Christian. In order to become a member, you must have a credible profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and have followed Him in believer’s baptism. Finally, you will be presented to the church members at one of our gatherings for affirmation as a covenanted member of our church. If you need to be baptized, this is when and where that will happen as well. If you have any further questions for follow up then one of our Elders would love to visit more with you.
